The CARE program has a focus on Community, Actions & attitude, Relationship and the Environment. The Year 1s and 2s run special events as part of their CARE program learning. In the past these have included: a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party to raise money for a cause, a Victorian Day at school where the children find out what it was like to go to school 100 years ago, a starry night where parents are invited to star gaze and do other fun activities with their children.
Victorian School Day
Students and teachers dress up in olden day clothes and participate in a Victorian School Day. It ties in with the History curriculum where they look at Continuity and Change. So, school 100 years ago, and now, present day, and compare them. On our Victorian school day, students step back in time… they will sit in rows, write on a chalk boards, use fountain pens and abacuses, play olden day games such as hop scotch, marbles and pick up sticks and we also take olden day photos usig a sepia tone app. Teachers are super strict and they use props such as the dreaded cain! Stepping back in time enables students and teachers to live a day in the past and then students are able to easily compare the past to the present.
In Science we look at the sky and compare the day sky to the night sky. Over the course of a term, during the school day, we will make observations about the sun and the sky and weather patterns. On a scheduled, particular night, we will invite parents and students to a sausage sizzle and to participate in a star gazing night. Parents are invited to bring a picnic rug, download a FREE app on their iphones/ipads and together with their child, they can see what stars, planets are up ahead in the night sky. Other activities such as constellation sewing and milky way paintings will be available to do too. It is such a fun night which is enjoyed by all!
